ALBERTA'S SENIORS DESERVE BETTER

The immediately prior posting (SENSIBLE HEALTH CARE # 15) refers to the launching of a campaign on behalf of Alberta’s Seniors.

On Tuesday May 9/2006, a widely representative panel, organized and moderated by the Chairpersons of Public Interest Alberta’s committee on Seniors; Noel Somerville and Bill Moore-Kilgannon; presented, in a powerfully moving manner, what too many seniors having to depend on long term care for their survival are experiencing under the Klein government's market oriented values.

Here are the messages the campaign is sending to the Klein government:-

(1) Provide the assistance required to allow seniors to stay in their own homes as long as possible.

(2) Ensure an adequate number PUBLIC seniors care facilities to meet growing needs, and provide ALL MEDICALLY NECESSARY SERVICES FREE OF CHARGE.

(3) DECLARE A MORATORIUM ON THE RE-CLASSIFICATION of long term care facilities into assisted living facilities.

(4) Mandate the establishment of ADVISORY COUNCILS IN ALL SENIORS CARE facilities that receive any form of government funding.

(5) ESTABLISH AN INDEPENDENT SENIORS ADVOCATE as an officer of the Legislature.

Do not, REPEAT DO NOT, let the illusion that the Klein government has responded adequately to the Auditor’s report on the horrors of health care in too many seniors facilities deter you from acting.
